Barahona, Dominican Republic

7 days/6 nights featuring the National Parks of the Dominican Republic's Southwest coast including Jaragua, Isla Cabritos, Sierra de Baoruco.

Our role here is to develop an understanding of the parks and their diversity in order to assist local and international programs with preserving and protecting these jewels of the Caribbean.

Barahona, Dominican RepublicDay 01 (Saturday) Arrive Santo Domingo, staff meets and transfers you to the Renaissance hotel. Overnight Santo Domingo.

Day 02 (Sunday) Breakfast at the hotel then depart Santo Domingo driving West along the coast to Barahona. Arriving about lunch time enjoy the comfort of Casa Bonita, right on the coast overlooking the Caribbean sea. Lunch enroute at a local restaurant and dinner at the hotel. Overnight Barahona (B, L, D)

Day 03 (Monday) After breakfast depart for Jaragua National Park. This huge park, established in 1983 has 223,625 acres featuring diverse environments including coast, forests, lakes and mountains. Filled with a wide range of species including rare and endangered birds, mammals and aquatics it is a wonder of nature. Overnight Barahona (B, L, D)

La Isla CabritosDay 04 (Tuesday) After breakfast we visit Parque National Isla Cabritos featuring Lago Enriquillo, the largest salt water lake in the Antilles, located 135 feet below sea level, home of the American Crocodile. Overnight Barahona (B, L, D)

 

Day 05 (Wednesday) Breakfast then we visit Parque National Sierra de Baoruco. A mountainous park with rain forest and the famous Larimar mines. Overnight Barahona (B, L, D)

Sierra de BaorucoDay 06 (Thursday) Spend the morning at the lodge relaxing then check out and return to Santo Domingo in the PM and the comfort of the Renaissance. Enjoy a special farewell dinner at El Meson de la Cava. Overnight Santo Domingo (B, L)

Day 07 (Friday) Staff transfers you to the airport, assists with exit formalities and checking in for your international departure Or enjoy an optional tour of the colonial areas and overnight.


Expedition includes:
Transfers related to the tour starting with arrival to the Santo Domingo airport. Hotels (based on double occupancy), tours as noted including the services of an English speaking licensed naturalist guide. Meals as outlined by B for Breakfast, L for Lunch and D for Dinner. Service charges and taxes.

NOT included: International air, items of a personal nature such as entry taxes, visas, exit taxes, laundry, bar bills, telephone, anything not specifically mentioned as included.

NO triples allowed (except children sharing with adults)

Optional extra night with day tour of Santo Domingo:
Colonial Square in Santo DomingoAfter breakfast discover the oldest city in the New World. Stop at "Los Tres Ojos", a natural fresh water spring, set like crystal jewels in an underground fern-covered cave. Visit the first palace in the new world, "El Alcazar" and the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor (NOTE: Long pants and shirts with sleeves (short or long but NO tank tops) are mandatory to enter the Cathedral). Enjoy a stroll on "Atarazana", a lovely, picturesque street, one of the first in the city and where all the most important churches, buildings and parks of the colonial city are located.
Moving forward through time depart the colonial section and enter the modern city. Hear you will see the Presidential Palace and the Cultural Plaza, where you will find the National Theater, the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of the Dominican Man. Enjoy a typical Dominican lunch and there will be time for shopping. Evening free to enjoy the city nightlife. Overnight Santo Domingo (B, L)
